I’m not a philosopher nor a doctoral degree recipient. And I’ve not spent years studying the inner workings related to the importance of accountability. But it’s something I “just know” matters in life, and in business. Call it a gut feeling. I’m sure you have those too.
And if you’ve ever encountered employers, employees, friends, family, or anyone really, who is not accountable for themselves or their actions, then you absolutely know what I’m talking about.
Around 15 years ago, I had the privilege of taking part in some master’s level leadership training when I was working at the University of South Dakota. We had an incredible number of conversations about the types of leaders there are. We talked about those whom we knew. We talked about the kinds of leaders we’d like to become.

A water bottle. Granola bar. Sunglasses and a hat. Kleenex. Cash and a credit card. Cell phone and headphones. And don’t forget a few business cards in case you meet someone on your hike. I’m all prepared for my morning exercise. It doesn’t take long to get ready because I’m in a routine of grabbing the same stuff day after day. I just wish there was a fanny pack that had a cup holder for my morning decaf too.

I’m just back in the office after nearly two weeks on the road for a short vacation over the 4th of July and then a very lengthy drive for NASGW related events in Washington, Idaho and Montana. After spending a collective 48 hours in the vehicle, I’m ready to experience some different seating accommodations.
But I very much enjoyed the company as my wife joined me on the trip. And the scenery was incredible, at times breathtaking. We are so fortunate in this country to be able to enjoy those landscapes and vistas. Some of us live there, some of us visit. All of us are blessed.
