In this, my final letter as Chairman of NASGW, I want to thank you all for the privilege of talking to each and every one of you through these letters. I hope these letters have in some ways given you inspiration and guidance in your career and personal development.
As a reminder, some of my themes were centered more on my life philosophies, like Independence, Relationships and Passion. While others were centered around business issues, such as Direction, Goal Setting and Strategic Planning, and Change. In each of these themes, I shared my thoughts on how I approach my day, in work and at home, with friends and family. All of this has been shaped by many of my past and present peers and mentors. It is my hope that in some way these letters have helped you in your career and that some of you have found positive reinforcement of your balance of work and family life.
Sharing my thoughts and ideas on work and personal life has given me the opportunity to improve myself as well. This has allowed me to re-evaluate my priorities. For example, I’ve focused more attention on mentoring my team so that they have the confidence to make smart decisions on critical issues and that they understand how to look beyond the four walls that surround them when considering any action. I’ve shown them how to build strong relationships with vendors and customers so they are first on the list when new opportunities arise. And to strengthen their character so everyone knows that they will stand behind their commitments and in time will build the highest level of trust and integrity. I strive to instill in my team a passion and sense of pride in the work they do. I have a passion for this industry that is undying. I’m a lot happier rolling out of bed in the morning knowing that I’m working with products and people I love.
Until we cross paths again, let us not forget that beyond our jobs we need to value each other, our families, and our communities. Spend time listening to and respecting the people in your world of work. Make time for family celebrations and special occasions. Make a difference in your community by active involvement and service.
Writing these letters and sharing my thoughts has been my pleasure. I appreciate your friendship and support through my last two years as your chairman. This may be my final chapter in this role, but I’m looking forward to my next chapter! In the spirit of the New Year, “old acquaintances shall not be forgotten!”
May your Holidays be merry and your new year be filled with prosperity.
Thank you,
Chris Means
NASGW Chairman
