Chairman's Message: Goal Setting & Strategic Planning

Chris Means-1

Goal setting is the first step in building an ultimately successful business. Goals define what you and your team want to achieve and in what time frame. So as a team you set the long-term goal, then the mid-term goals, and short-term goals. It will let your team know where you want the organization to go and how to get there.

At the start of each day, you should have an idea of what needs to be done in the business to take care of the day-to-day issues. You will need a clear vision of your goals for the day and for the week ahead. As you meet with your teams, you will share that vision so that they understand and buy into the reasons for your direction. Total team participation becomes so much better when the team feels they are true partners sharing in the vision. It is a win-win for all.

As a strategic thinker, you need to set the “big picture” to accomplish the goals, and then communicate those plans in a manner that allows your management team to build the strategies that brings all areas of the company together to meet the common goal.

Getting the Most Out of the New Universal Dashboard

New to SCOPE in 2023, the Universal Dashboard offers great insight for businesses that don't need all the in-depth analysis offered by the higher tiers of SCOPE.  If your business is looking to maximize the value of SCOPE’s shipment and inventory data, the Universal Dashboard might be exactly what the doctor ordered.

Data analytics is all about finding answers to questions using past results. So knowing what questions to ask is a great starting point. The first question is usually, “What’s going on in the market?”. This is the most obvious and easiest to answer. Using the Universal Dashboard, you get a quick snapshot of sales by category, firearms, ammunition, and optics based on your specific timeframe. Finding the answer to your initial question should spark additional questions related to subcategories, calibers, sizes, date range comparisons, units vs. dollar volume, or geographic distribution.

Beware of False Hotel Offers

With the registration for the 2023 NASGW Expo about to open, the hotel vultures are already circling, claiming to be offering hotel block deals associated with NASGW. We have already been alerted that members are receiving solicitations for our event. Please be aware that all room block communications will come directly from NASGW with an NASGW email address. If you are receiving communications from 3rd parties, they are in no way affiliated with our event so beware. We ask that you please book your hotel through our room block to ensure that your reservation is associated with our group and you get the negotiated rates through NASGW.

Who Makes the Laws?

There were fireworks at a Congressional hearing covering a critical topic not just to the firearm industry and Second Amendment supporters, but to all Americans. It wasn’t entirely unexpected.

The U.S. House Subcommittee on Crime and Federal Government Surveillance’s hearing titled, “ATF’s Assault on the Second Amendment: When is Enough Enough?” posed a simple question.

Who writes law in the United States? That begged other questions. Can government agencies go rogue and create sweeping regulations that turn law-abiding citizens into criminals? Or does law-making authority reside with the people through their duly elected representatives in Congress?
