President's Message: Accountability, Responsibility, Right and Wrong

It’s been an absolutely remarkable and chaotic week. And as I write this, it’s only Wednesday.

From a very public shooting in Kansas City, where over 20 people were injured and one person died, to the closing arguments in New York for the trial focusing on the gross mismanagement and fraud at the National Rifle Association, this has been a very busy week.

I’ll start with the situation in Kansas City, and the tragic events following the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl victory parade. A celebration of a million Chiefs fans was marred and overshadowed by a shooting that took place near Union Station in a crowd of parade goers there to celebrate the big win.

Shaping Business Through Data

One of the challenges facing the firearms industry today (and, perhaps all businesses these days) is consistent unpredictability.

Depending on your niche in the market, 2023 was most likely “flat” compared to the early years of the pandemic — but still elevated over previous demand surges.

Here in the early weeks of 2024, there is still an air of uncertainty — especially with the election looming and potential increasing instability in the Middle East, as well as the continuing war in Ukraine. As such, having access to and harnessing data has never been more important.

Follow the Gun Sales Trends

The National Association of Sporting Goods Wholesalers’ SCOPE programs provide important, useful and, above all, accurate firearm industry sales information that can help retailers maximize profits. The three programs — SCOPE PLX, SCOPE DLX and SCOPE CLX — are part of an industry-owned, distributor-led initiative to collect and analyze data that strengthens shooting sports businesses.

“Distributors have taken the lead to create information that helps our industry grow,” says NASGW President Kenyon Gleason. “Through SCOPE’s data tools, retailers can better rely on their distributor partners to understand market trends and what that means for their business.”

ATF 'Zero-Tolerance' Revocations Continue at a Blistering Pace

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) released updated data for inspections, warning letters and revocations of Federal Firearms Licensee (FFLs) and the news is disturbing. The campaign to shutter firearm retailers over minor clerical errors, called a “zero-tolerance” policy, is having devastating effects on small businesses and the ability for law-abiding citizens to exercise their Second Amendment rights by freely approaching a firearm retailer for a purchase.
